Creepy Anime Girl is Creepy and Yet Pretty F*ckin’ Amazing

We all know that the Japanese have a thing for all things kawaii. They love their anime and the corruptible innocence of the Lolita. The otaku in its natural environment can rarely interact with real women ( see any post on that guy who married a video game character) let alone fathom a healthy relationship with a real woman. Emphasis on real. It seems after body pillows emblazoned with the scantily clad bodies of your favorite big-eyed anime girl, interactive dating games and robotic women that a fully programmable pop-idol would be created. Enter Hatsune Miku. She is a fully…

Venture Brothers season finale- By now I’m assuming that anyone who wanted to watch it already has so, be forewarned- spoilers coming up. When it came time for my prom, I said “fuck that”- and my buddies and I went out for a dinner we could barely afford than to another friends house where we all drank blue soda and watched old episodes of Dragon Ball. I know, it sounds lame- but fuck- at least I had friends. Poor Hank and Dean only have each other so their prom was essentially filled with chaperons. I know Doc Venture’s heart was…

Celebrities Without Pants

One of the cool things about living in New York is that you never know who you will run into in the street. Sure it could be your dreaded ex-boyfriend, but luckily sometimes it’s a celebrity. A few weeks ago, i walked right past Keanu Reeves as he was filming by my job. The man is gorgeous I’m convinced people should just pay him to stand around and look handsome. Then there is also the infamous time when Denis Leary heard me ranting on my phone and called me a ‘crazy bitch’- he was right I was having an awful…

Just Your Average Anime Character

I’ll admit that I don’t watch nearly as much anime as I used to. Frankly, there is just too much of it and as I have discussed with several of my friends from the conventions- it kinda stopped being fun when the Narutards showed up. But I’ll save that rant for another time. I’ve been home sick today and aside from watching a few blissful hours of the ‘X-files” ( 1993-2010, my longest relationship ever ) I did some old school anime viewing. As a result, I bring you the ten most re-occurring anime character types 10.) The Pervert a.k.a-…

Some People!

A little update from yesterday’s entry. I asked two friends who really liked Let the Right One In if they had seen Let Me In. Both said that they hadn’t and didn’t want to, basically because they said the original was so great that they didn’t see the point. This bothers me, because I feel like it seems like they’re intentionally robbing themselves of a relatively enjoyable experience because they think it will somehow sully something they hold in high regard, yet won’t even give it the chance. I mean it’s possible they’ll like the English version more, which is…

Don’t Call it a Come Back

I know, I know it’s been forever. I apologize, and I’d like to make excuses, but I won’t. But hey, I’m here now and I want to make it up to you, so today, I’m going to talk about something everyone seems to hate. Movie Remakes. over the past oh let’s say decade, there has been a big influx of movies that have come out that are remakes of older, some would argue, better movies. People have been heard saying that Hollywood is out of ideas, or that this is just laziness and that they’re all out to just make…

“And You Thought That the Emo Kid Scene was Bad- Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark

I actually really love Julie Taymor’s work. I thought her designs for Lion King on Broadway were innovative and down-right bold. She was fully capable of taking animated characters, that weren’t even human and transforming them into something beautiful. The costumes looked more like puppets, with wooden exoskeletons rather than furries. Not to mention, have you seen Titus? By far one of the most visually stunning films of theatrical flare I have ever seen. It took its source material and ran with it, producing a pathos driven, surreal and violent adaptation to one of the most visceral of Shakespeare’s plays.…

I heard about this back a few months and I have to say I am really surprised at the quality of it. The folks at io9.com posted some stills earlier today and I have to say I’m interested, the same bizarre way I was interested in watching the live action, musical Alice in Wonderland porn from the 70′s or how I still manage to giggle at The Room eight times later. Well, at least this Avatar won’t make me wear those stupid glasses, not to mention this one would be short. I mean how long can a frikkin’ porn be…

Totally not Superman (Part 3)

Ok the title’s a lie. This one is totally about Superman. Specifically this one is going to be about Supermans (Supermen?) who are a little more obscure, and certainly not your typical swoop down and save the lady types. Also, they were all created by or heavily worked on by Grant Morrison… Let’s begin shall we? Meet Overman: Overman exists in exactly one comic book, namely Animal Man #23 and he is completely insane. A product of genetic engineer on his home planet of Earth-17, Overman was originally a lot like Earth-1′s Superman until he got the clap and it…

Retron 3 Review- I Know, It’s Been a While

September 2, 2010
By

A friend of mine had recommended this to me after I told him a six hour Maniac Mansion blasted my old NES. I’ll admit I was a bit wary of this considering it looked like one of those cheap gaming boxes you’d find in Target at Christmas. First and foremost, ‘yes’- it does work. Each system comes equipped to play any Nintendo, Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo game you might have. Most of my old Sega games were hidden in my parents moldy basement for about ten years and they still work- so needless to say most of these older…

Stuff My Newphew Says ( or Stuff I’ve Posted Somewhere Else, but I’m Putting Here Because I Need to Put Something.)

So a little background on this first; I have an adorable 7 year old nephew named Evan who it turns out loves Transformers… probably because he realizes his uncle does too and because said uncle gave him a ton of them to play with. Anyway, he found my DVDs of the original cartoon and the more recent Transformers Animated, as well as the recent movies. (Which is better than finding other DVDs of mine I guess) and had some observations. So here we go, the official first GRG entry about NLTAG’s favorite thing he’s probably to old to be caring…

Satoshi Kon Entry Take Two

August 30, 2010
By

I have deleted my previous and what I deemed insultingly short post from early in the week. It’s my blog, so meh. —- I intended to write a review of the RetroN 3 system I purchased and I also intend to write a review for the Evangelion 2.2 You Can(Not) Advance (whose animation left me slack-jawed at times, all in a good way). I find, however, that I cannot more forward to these things in good conscience without creating a more detailed entry compared to the brief Satoshi Kon post I made last week. The writer over at makikoitoh.com took…

Maybe this thing has a Flux Capacitor- ‘Cause I Could Swear This Was Some Time Travel

So just to let you folks know, No Less Than A God and I are on Vacation this week. He is currently on a boat. Yes, a boat. A M*thaF*ckin’ Boat! Well- it’s a cruise, but it’s a similar idea. As for me, I traveled to a pyramid, sported the camo bikini and drank mojitos by the pool and totally ignored my doctor’s orders and played DDR anyway. Now I’m off again for a few more days- no rest for the wicked I suppose. I returned home from the first leg of my travels to see this- Oh yes. Review…

The Girl From ‘V for Vendetta” Turns Into a Bird Apparently

August 18, 2010
By

So, apparently Natalie Portman and Meg Griffin become ballet rivals, go clubbing, make-out and one of them turns into a bird. The transformation towards the end is most likely a dream-like manifestation of her stressed out mental state. Now if she actually turns into some sort of demonic swan- that could be pretty neat in a Kafka-kinda way. The white face and creepy black soulless eyes in the film stills floating about the interwebz look keen as well. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jaI1XOB-bs&fs=1&hl=en_US]

The World of Anime Fandom- Or, A Good Way To Creep Out Your Friends

August 17, 2010

NLTAG has his Transformers- but I am a recovering anime geek. Yes, I did the conventions. Hell I worked in several of them Yes, I ‘cosplayed’- Asuka school uniform and Tsunade respectively. It started back in 1996. I was up early for the junior high school trip, too early for my cartoon-rattled mind to function. I grabbed my sugary cereal and plopped down in front of the TV until it was time to head to school. The only thing that was on that early was a show that kinda looked like Rainbow Brite. Some blonde chick, with several friends in…

First I want to apologize for taking so long to update. Let’s just say that sometimes your job takes over more of your life than you’d like. Heck, sometimes it takes up all of your life to the point where you wonder weather or not you’re going to have time to do things like laundry and sleep. Now however, It’s blog time, and I’ve got some personal stuff to talk about. So, I’m sitting here watching Beetlejuice for the umpteenth time. I can quote every line, several of which have slipped into my everyday speech habits. I absolutely LOVED this movie as a kid. My parents copied it off television and I remember watching it to the point where the tape squeaked. As I grew up I loved Tim Burton’s macabre style and bizarre sense of humour. For years, he could do no wrong in my eyes. Nightmare Before Christmas was a huge part of my childhood. I carried a Sally doll with detachable limbs to Thanksgiving and scared the shit…

Shiny, Happy People

I am going to state my thesis statement right out in the open. No funny limericks or anecdotes- right here right now. I think Twilight is a big pile of shit. That’s right, I think it is quite possibly the worst thing to happen to the vampires, since those Scooby- Doo crossovers I used to see on TV as a kid. Hell, the Count from Sesame Street has more in common with the vampires of folklore than those that inhabit the Twilight-universe. The Count even has the obsessive compulsive disorder that the famed vampires of lore have. “One, Two, Three-…

Totally not Superman (Part 2)

Ok this time I’m giving you a Two-for-one special. We’re going to look at two completely messed up characters from two indie companies by two well known creators who both happen to be based heavily on the Man of Steel. Up first, the most loved Super Hero on Earth: The Homelander. Man can’t you just taste the genuine spirit of Heroism in him? I mean, c’mon he’s going off to lead all the heroes of Earth against some ambiguous thread that could very well destroy us all. He knows they might not succeed even then, but he had to do…

Totally Not Superman (Part 1)

pas•tiche -noun a literary, musical, or artistic piece consisting wholly or chiefly of motifs or techniques borrowed from one or more sources. Plainly speaking, I read a lot of comic books. If you could see behind me right now you’d see a big pile of them, mostly trades (I know! I’m killing the singles market!) and mostly from DC. Don’t get me wrong, I like stuff from other companies, but there’s just something about the DC heroes that have always touched me. I always felt like on the whole they were more epic. You only have to look to Superman…

I have been playing this damn game ( no pun intention) since a friend recommended it to be back at Wicked Faire. Yes, it is exactly like God of War- only thing is it is pissing me off alot more. Yes, it’s goregeous- I read somewhere that it was designed by Barlowe. In my opinion his artwork amazes me- the intense detail of it. It’s a shame that artists like this aren’t recognized by more people as they are extremely talented. Damien Hirst can’t paint- can’t create a world like this- yet he gets paid millions. I don’t want to…

I didn’t write those things, so they’re by default inferior. Enjoy the ride folks, you won’t be disappointed. Oh, and keep an eye on GD, she’s a crafty one. ~NLTAG
